In a comical turn of events that has locals shaking their heads and chuckling, a would-be burglar tried to make off with a rather unusual prize from the South Bank café earlier this week. Staff reported that a man, believed to be in his mid-thirties, strolled into the café on Hill Terrace around 10 AM, eyed a life-sized cardboard cutout of a popular local musician, and decided it was time to 'break' into the music scene. Witnesses say the man was surprisingly casual about his intentions, asking staff, 'How much for the cutout?' before attempting to sneak it out the door under his arm. "I thought he was joking at first," said Victoria Hunter, a 27-year-old physiotherapist who was enjoying her morning coffee. "But then I realized he was serious! I mean, who steals a cardboard cutout?" The situation escalated quickly when a nearby patron alerted the staff, who promptly called the authorities. As police arrived, the would-be thief reportedly tried to convince them he was merely an 'art collector.' "I’ve seen some odd things in my career, but that was a first," Officer Tom Blake stated with a grin. The man was apprehended without incident, and the cutout was safely returned to its rightful place, much to the relief of the South Bank team. As for the thief, he now faces charges of petty theft and will likely have to explain his actions in court. If nothing else, he certainly gave the town a story to laugh about for weeks to come. In a town of just 6,222 residents, news travels fast, and this tale is already the talk of the Scottbur Historic Bridge. Local businesses are now jokingly marketing their items as 'theft-proof' to avoid any future sticky-fingered incidents. Hunter added with a chuckle, "Next time, I’m just going to keep an eye on my coffee and my cutouts!"
