Since Bruce Coles, a local engineer, first launched his community initiative aimed at raising mental health awareness in Mackney, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. In an earlier report published on December 31, 2025, Coles announced his plans to host workshops and discussions that encourage residents to address mental health challenges openly. As 2026 progresses, Coles has successfully hosted two workshops at the Mackney Community Center, with attendance numbers exceeding expectations. The first workshop, titled 'Talking About Mental Health,' attracted over 50 participants, ranging from teenagers to senior citizens. Coles emphasized the importance of creating a safe space for dialogue, stating, "It’s heartening to see so many people come together to share their experiences. Mental health should be as normal to discuss as physical health." The second workshop, held just last week, focused on strategies for coping with stress and anxiety. Local therapists joined Coles to facilitate the session, providing participants with practical tools and resources. Feedback from attendees has been positive, with many expressing gratitude for the opportunity to learn and connect with others facing similar challenges. In addition to the workshops, Coles is collaborating with local businesses, including Tony's Pizza on Third Close, to create a community outreach program that combines mental health education with local events. Starting next month, a portion of the proceeds from special pizza nights will be donated to mental health organizations in the area. "We want to make mental health awareness a community-wide effort," Coles stated during a recent interview. The initiative has also garnered support from the Mackney Town Council, which has offered to promote upcoming events on their website and social media channels. Council members have recognized the importance of mental health discussions and are considering additional funding to expand the initiative further. Looking ahead, Coles plans to host a mental health fair at Royville Cemetery in the spring, featuring informational booths, guest speakers, and activities for all ages. "We want to create a fun and educational atmosphere to remove the stigma surrounding mental health," Coles said. He hopes that by engaging the community in a relaxed setting, residents will feel more comfortable seeking help and support. As the initiative continues to grow, Coles remains committed to fostering an environment where mental health is openly discussed and prioritized in Mackney. Community members are encouraged to participate in upcoming events and share their stories, as together, they work towards a healthier, more supportive town.
